Xavier Pauchard was the Frenchman who designed the infamous Tolix stool back in 1937 and while it has a simple look and feel to it, a lot of thought had clearly gone into the design. It has a fabulous sweeping A frame design finished with graceful curved legs designed to bear the weight equally between them. While some say that the metal ‘x’ beneath the seat stands for Xavier, in truth it adds support and strength to the structure while the horizontal struts give more stability to the stool and serve as a useful foot rest. Without doubt, it’s a stool that was built to last.
