Don’t worry, we’ve put together a few tips to help.

How to choose the right size for your restaurant tables in Brisbane

Before rushing in and purchasing a random number of restaurant tables, it’s important to take the following factors into account :

  • Table height
  • Customer size
  • Seat numbers
  • Space between the tables

The following factors will help you choose the right size tables for your restaurant.

Table height

The height of the table you choose plays an important part in your decision making. You need to take care to select a table with a height of around 720-750mm as this is considered the standard height for a restaurant table. Anything less than is often classed as being bar height and may be deemed too casual, depending of course, on your style of restaurant. A standard height table of 720mm comfortably accommodates standard dining chairs with a height of 490mm from the floor to the seat.

How many covers can you accommodate?

Before choosing your tables you’ll need to have an idea of how many customers you can serve based on the space available. It’s usually suggested that a person needs 600mm in width with a minimum of one person’s width between each diner. These measurements can probably be reduced for fast-dining restaurants and increased for a fine dining experience. For example, a 700mm square or round table will comfortably accommodate 2 customers in a formal dining room, whereas for a casual dining room, we would suggest that a 600mm table be used for 2 diners.

Ideally, it’s best to work out a table plan using graph paper. This way you can consider different sizes of tables and work out which fits your space best. It could be a combination of 600mm and 700mm tables or you might prefer to use larger communal dining tables around the edge of your dining area with smaller tables within the inner space for couples.

Space ….

While it can be tempting to squeeze extra tables in to serve more customers this is a risky strategy. Nobody likes to feel crowded and most people prefer not to overhear the conversation that’s taking place at the table next to them. This is one of the reasons that booth seating is particularly popular with restaurant owners since it gives diners a sense of privacy and makes access easier for your waiting staff.

As a rule of thumb, aim to leave between 700-800mm space from restaurant tables to your walls and from one table to another so that customers can push their chairs away to get up and waiting staff can move freely between tables for a hassle-free service. Also, be sure to leave routes clear that lead to the kitchen and to the restrooms.
