Pendant Lighting – There’s More To It Than You Might Think

A pendant light is so called because it usually hangs on a chain or a cord from the ceiling. However that’s where the similarities end. In fact there are a multitude of differing styles and designs and that’s why it’s fast becoming a popular choice amongst cafe owners who want to inject a certain ambience in order to create the right look, feel, and mood. With this in mind, what kind of pendent lighting is best for you?

Composites and finishes

Unsurprisingly there are a number of materials and finishes that pendant lighting can be made of. From shiny chrome for that perfect cutting edge industrial feel, through to wooden drum-shaped pendant lighting which has the ability to give a softer, moody ambience. For use in cafe kitchens, why not opt for clear glass pendent lighting to help reflect the light, while offering a clean modern, contemporary look and if it’s a cost effective funky option you’re after why not opt for pendant lighting in vibrant plastic.

Size matters

The size of your pendant lighting will also play a big part in getting the lighting right. The trick is to have enough light so as diners can see what it is they’re eating and more importantly, who they’re eating with, yet not too much light that it’s lit up like a funfair. This being the case why not opt for larger pendant lighting over well-lit areas such as entrances and toilets. Alternatively larger pendant lighting with softer bulbs above individual tables or booth seating works just as well as they create a softer intimate glow. Smaller pendant lighting (in particular globe lighting) is a great alternative to track lighting and creates the same effect of bright but less intense areas of light which tend to work in a cafe setting.

To hard-wire or to plug in

There’s no doubting that hard-wiring your pendant lighting can be labour intensive especially when you have multiples of them, but the finished look should be crisp, clean, and flawless. Alternatively plug-in pendant lighting is far less work however they’ll usually require a longer cord (maybe even an extension lead or two) which you’ll have to worry about placing across your cafe floors or walls. In addition you’ll have the added hassle of visible plugs and cords too. As a rule of thumb, if it’s primary lighting over entrances or kitchen spaces then it might be better to spend a little more and opt for hard-wired pendant lighting.
